The Voice of Grace that makes all Paths Straight

“As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

Luke 3:4 ESV

Outline taken from Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening – day 3

1. The voice of grace bring high the low places of thought towards God. Let every low thought of God be vanquished and high and lofty thoughts of the Almighty rise high above in their place.

2. The voice of grace bring low the high and lofty thoughts of myself and squash every pride-filled exalted thought of me that would keep me from experiencing the joy and pleasure of my God who resists the proud and gives grace to the humble.

3. The voice of grace make straight the crooked paths of doubt and wavering where a man is tossed to and fro through thoughts of thinking too lowly of the Lord’s ability to deliver and to fortify the faith that would take God at His word and walk with confidence with Him on the straight paths that lead to His glory.

4. The voice of grace make the rough places smooth. The places where the trials of life would seek to steal away our faith and make us level accusations against the Lord.

O God of all grace where my thoughts are low of thee,

Raise my thoughts higher as You drive me to bended knee;

Vanquish shallow thinking that would bring You down,

Speak grace that elevates that my thoughts of You may abound.

O God of all grace when the crooked paths of my life

Bend me to envy, to doubt, and to strife;

Speak grace that will bring stability to my faith

As You, God of all grace, make these crooked paths straight.

O God of all grace where my thoughts of self are high,

Squash my lofty pride and let my thoughts of you be spry;

Speak grace that condemns my self to the dust,

To send me to the ashes I know is a must.

O God of all grace where rough places exist

Let my prayer for Your smoothing presence persist;

Not in order to consume the easy places on my lust,

Speak grace, for the forward march of Your glory is a must!
